President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on the construction of power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant

The corresponding document is called “On Measures to Support the Development of Nuclear Energy and Improving Safety in the Use of Nuclear Energy”. The government is charged with submitting a thematic bill to parliament.

According to Radio Liberty, the Czech company Škoda JS has received the preliminary approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to complete the construction of new reactors without tenders. It is part of the United Machine-Building Plants holding, which is subordinate to the Russian Gazprombank, the majority of whose shares are owned by Gazprom and related structures.

The main motive of this decision, as explained at the plant itself, is a lower project cost compared with other manufacturers.

“Two blocks cost 3 billion, well, a little more than 3 billion dollars. And if you take, for example, Korean, or Chinese, or Areva, Westinghouse, then they have a minimum price of one unit – this is 4 billion dollars, ”said Oleg Rakhlinsky, deputy general director for the construction of KNPP.

The justification for the construction of the third and fourth KhNPP power units totaling more than 70 billion hryvnia was approved last summer.
