“Sanctions from hell” back. Gold and missiles will save us

Two US senators decided to return to the agenda “hellish sanctions” against Russia, at the same time unleashing them from the 2016 elections in the US and the situation in Ukraine.

Now they are invited to punish Russia for interfering in the American elections, which will be held in 2020. According to the official version, such tough measures should finally prevent the Russian authorities from influencing who will become the president of the United States.

Many of the restrictions on this list are even tougher than those that appeared in similar bills on “hellish sanctions”. However, the Russian financial markets demonstrate an extremely cold-blooded reaction to new threats. Gradually, Russian assets develop a certain immunity to the sanctions plans of American politicians.

The official goal of the new bill on the future punishment of Russia for the wrong choice of American voters was clearly described by one of its authors, influential Republican senator Marco Rubio:

“Since Vladimir Putin understands only the policy of intimidation, the law DETER (Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines, DETER Act) -“ The Law on the Protection of Elections from Threats by Establishing Restrictions. ”- Note by the Author) of 2019 makes it absolutely clear to Russia and to other hostile governments that the United States will immediately respond to attempts to intervene in our elections. “

It is obvious that in reality there is no connection between the alleged interference in the elections (by which you can mean anything at all, including the very existence of such media as RT or Sputnik) and subsequent sanctions. The bill of senators Mark Rubio and Chris Van Hollen simply creates a good cover for introducing measures that other US lawmakers would have opposed under other circumstances.

It may seem that the preposition does not matter at all. But this view of the situation does not take into account some important details. Not every American senator or congressman, regardless of party affiliation, is eager to burn bridges in relations with Russia and return the world to the state of the Cold War, with the constant risk of falling into a hot standoff, including the use of nuclear weapons.

Moreover, the key players in the Trump administration – such as Finance Minister Stephen Mnuchin – have repeatedly opposed “hellish sanctions”, not out of love for Russia, but out of a sense of self-preservation and a desire to avoid risks for the global financial system in general and for the petrodollar system in particular.

Under these conditions, the only way to push through the Congress, the Senate and the Trump administration is the same “infernal package” – linking it to some reason that will be so important and “toxic” that refusing to vote for imposing sanctions will look like real betrayal. homeland.

Senators Rubio and Van Hollen have already encountered this problem. As the BBC rightly notes, last year they had already introduced a similar bill, but it did not even reach the Senate vote. Attempts to fasten new sanctions to the incident in the Kerch Strait, in fact, failed.

The case of Skrypal also did not meet expectations in terms of the possibility of imposing really tough restrictions, although enormous resources were invested in his media and diplomatic promotion. Already few people remember about the downed Malaysian Boeing, from which they also were going to build a quite effective cover for a really serious anti-Russian sanctions package.

After the investigation, the Special Prosecutor Muller (who declared Russia’s “proven interference” in the American elections, but did not find evidence of the Kremlin’s relations with Trump’s campaign headquarters), will be willing to impose “hellish sanctions” for the 2016 elections among Republican senators and congressmen. few. And even more so, the Trump administration, who rightly sees this as an unnecessary image risk for himself, is unlikely to agree to this decision.

If you look at the situation from the point of view of a suitable excuse, then “Russia’s intervention” in the US presidential elections scheduled for 2020 is an ideal option.

And every senator, congressman or minister who opposes the punishment of Russia can be safely recorded as an agent of the Kremlin and the enemy of American democracy. This sharply raises the chances of passing the bill through Congress and the Senate, as well as the implementation of the anti-Russian measures laid down in it.

According to the bill, “the director of the National Intelligence of the United States must, within 60 days after the election, submit to the congress a report on whether Russia or another state tried to intervene in the electoral process.” And here it is worth recalling that the same organizations that declared the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq will give an opinion on the intervention or its absence.

This blatant lie (and the fact that it was a lie was recognized both in London and Washington at the official level) became a pretext for military intervention and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens who were killed solely for American and British political ambitions. Expect honesty from the British and US authorities after such a precedent – naivety, bordering on insanity.

And by the way. By and large, the bill of Rubio and Van Hollen became positive for the Russian financial markets.

This paradoxical situation is explained simply: if sanctions are applied for the elections of 2020, then the chance for their introduction in 2019 is very small, because the premature introduction of restrictions is the actual “pulling out the fangs” from this bill.

In today’s political realities, it can be said that before the November 2020 elections there is an entire eternity for which everything can change, ranging from the geopolitical priorities of Washington to the economic situation in the world.

When Senator Rubio says that “Vladimir Putin understands only the policy of intimidation,” he lies, but according to the laws of psychology, at the same time he reveals the truth about his own thinking, which can really be influenced by a “kind word”, but only if you have the very “gun” “About which Al Capone spoke.

The only way to interact with our American partners is to calmly but consistently demonstrate the consequences that they will face if the red lines cross the relations with Russia.

It’s not a fact that even this approach will work in terms of calming down American “hawks” – Russophobes, but there are still no more effective options. The best defense against sanctions and any external pressure is gold in the vaults of the Bank of Russia and Avangard missiles on alert.
