TASS, November 8. /TASS/. Renovation of Chukotka’s one of the backbone airports in Pevek will take four years. The renovation is vitally necessary as the city will very soon become the region’s economic center, the local authorities told TASS on Wednesday.

“The renovation will take four years – from 2019 to 2022,” the regional Department of Transport, Communication and Roads said. “The airport upgrade is vitally necessary for Chukotka, as very soon the city will become the region’s economic center – to there will come Russia’s first floating nuclear heat power plant, to there will come cargos for one of the leading gold-copper fields – Baimskoye, and the infrastructures will be improving.”

The airport was built in 1939. The federal budget allocates 3.4 billion rubles ($51.5 million) for the renovation. The airport continues to upgrade the equipment.

While the airport will be closed, passengers will use either an airport at the regional center, Anadyr, or the airport in Keperveyem – in a neighboring district.

Pevek is Russia’s northernmost city with the population of about 5,000. The airport is 18km away from the city.
