OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greming said that the ideas expressed by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on the settlement of the conflict in the Donbas may give a fresh impetus to the Minsk agreements and therefore deserve attention.
Earlier, Lukashenko, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, said that Minsk is ready to take control of the border between Russia and the DPR and LPR and accompany the elections in the Donbas.
In addition, he expressed the opinion that it is advisable to consider the option of a joint UN peacekeeping mission and the OSCE in the Donbass. He also expressed readiness to place in Belarus a technical point of the contact group on the settlement of the conflict in the Donbas and noted that without the US involvement in the negotiations it is hardly possible to achieve the goal of the settlement.
“I should note your President, who is in favor of new ideas that need to be developed and promoted. For example, the expansion of the format of the Minsk process, which is very welcome.
And I already told your colleagues a couple of hours ago that these ideas need to be noted now, ”said Greminger.
“They will give the Minsk agreements a fresh impetus, the implementation of which is currently stuck in place. And this is unacceptable. We cannot be satisfied with the armed conflict that continues in Europe for the fifth year in a row. This needs to end. This will not only stop the suffering of the population of this country, but also lead to security in the region. Therefore, I believe that the format of the Minsk process should be expanded, and I am glad that these attempts are being made, ”he added.
