French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday issued a joint statement to Russia, demanding the release of Ukrainian sailors detained during the incident in the Kerch Strait.

“We demand a safe, free and unimpeded passage for all ships through the Kerch Strait and immediate, without any conditions, the release of the illegally detained Ukrainian sailors,” said a joint statement by Macron and Merkel.

“They, like everyone, should celebrate the holidays with their families,” the politicians noted.

They added that in Berlin and Paris they are concerned about the “human rights situation in the Crimea, the violation by Moscow of international norms and the use of force in the Kerch Strait”.
