Chairman of the Council of the Federation Committee on International Affairs Konstantin Kosachev commented on the statement by the US Permanent Representative to NATO about “guarantees for the safe passage of Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait.”
“The voiced statements on the eve of the Washington meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member states are called upon, on the one hand, to“ cheer up ”the members of the alliance, from which the host country, through its leader, expects higher military spending. On the other hand, the chosen themes – the Black Sea and the Kerch Strait – testify to the indirect participation of NATO in the continuation of Poroshenko’s election campaign on the eve of the second round of the presidential elections in Ukraine.
However, it seems that the topic was chosen extremely unfortunate and risky. US Permanent Representative to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, announced a package of measures providing, among other things, to increase reconnaissance activity and send more ships of NATO countries to the Black Sea, “to ensure the safe passage of Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait, the Sea of Azov.”
The safe passage of the Ukrainian courts through the Kerch Strait can guarantee only one thing – Ukraine’s strict observance of the established passage rules, which it has already done with success and did not encounter any problems from the Russian side.
However, Kiev and the Ukrainian presidential candidate Poroshenko personally do not need a pass, but provocations and heightened tension. Therefore, the emergence of new NATO ships in the region and signals to Ukraine about the support of its provocative activity by the alliance is the worst thing that could be done in this situation.
It is at least irresponsible and dangerous for all states in the region to surrender the situation to the characters who are extremely interested in widening the severity and scope of the conflict in the strait region, drawing NATO into it.
And the strengthening of the NATO group in the Black Sea is not the strengthening of security, but a direct challenge and threat to it.
If in Brussels they have not yet understood that Russia will be by all available means (and they are quite sufficient and effective) to defend their territory and their interests, then now is the time to try to understand this before it is too late.
In contrast to the Ukrainian elections, in which the West has already begun to play, everything is already serious here, so the signals from Washington should be sent not to Russia, but to Kiev. There will be no “small victorious war far from your borders”, no need to entertain yourself with such naive illusions.
