Five Russians honored with Japanese Order of the Rising Sun

TOKYO, November 3. /TASS/. Former Governor of Russia’s central European Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev, who is currently the Director General of HC Dynamo Moscow, and four more Russians have been awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun of various degrees. A government decree with the list of the recipients was made public on Saturday on the occasion of a national holiday, Culture Day.

In addition to Shantsev, oriental historian Viktor Larin and head of the Interregional Aikido Club Alexander Kachan are on the list. Director of the Moscow Origami Club Roman Sviridov and head of the Moscow Origami Center Zukhra Chashikhina were among the award recipients as well.

A total of 4,214 people have received the award this year, including 135 foreigners, mostly Americans. One of them was former US Vice President Dick Cheney.

Established in 1875, the Order of the Rising Sun has eight degrees. More than 50 citizens of the Soviet Union and Russia have been honored with it since the second half of the 20th century. Those were mainly scientists and artists, oriental scholars and experts on Japan.
