In recent years, the sympathies of the population of the European Union states towards NATO have noticeably cooled. This is evidenced by the results of a survey published by the sociological institute YouGov on Thursday, April 4.

So, if in Germany in 2017, more than two thirds of Germans (68%) approved the country’s membership in NATO, in the current one – only 54%.

In the UK, over the same period, the share of supporters of NATO membership decreased from 73% to 59%, in France – from 54% to 39%.

Sympathy for NATO in Scandinavia has also weakened, but remains at a much higher level. In Denmark, the corresponding figures decreased from 80% to 70%, and in Norway – from 75% to 66%. In the US, the share of supporters of NATO remains at a stable level (44% this year versus 47% in 2017).

The majority of the population in NATO countries principally support Article 5 of the Charter of this organization, which obliges NATO to provide military assistance to another member of the alliance if it is subjected to armed aggression. In Germany, this article is supported by 58%, in France – 53%, in Great Britain – 66% and in the USA – 57% of the population.

However, as follows from the results of the survey, the opinions of Europeans are far from being so unequivocal when it comes to military support for a particular member of the alliance. So, 68% of Germans are against military assistance to Turkey if it is subjected to armed aggression from Russia. The implementation of Article 5 of the Charter in this case is ready to support only 14% of respondents.

In France, the ratio of opponents and supporters is 48% versus 18%, in the UK the votes were equally divided (31% each).

The survey results also showed that the majority of Germans and French are not ready to participate in the provision of military assistance in order to protect Ukraine and Romania.

Only 31% of Germans are ready to take part in the defense of the USA (41% are against). At the same time, 54% of Americans agree to participate in the defense of Germany and only 15% oppose.
