MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. Cuba-born volleyball player Oreol Camejo has filed documents with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) requesting the change of his sports citizenship from Cuban to Russian, Alexander Yaremenko, the secretary general of the Russian Volleyball Federation (RVF), told TASS on Monday.
“Camejo has submitted documents requesting the change of the sports citizenship and we (RVF) have also filed papers to back up his request,” Yaremenko said in an interview with TASS.
“This issue will be dealt with at the FIVB Board of Administration meeting in March,” the RVF president said.
Sergei Shlyapnikov, the former head coach of the Russian national volleyball team, said in an interview with TASS that Camejo would be for the benefit of the national squad.
“A volleyball player of Camejo’s level would be of great use for Russia,” Shlyapnikov said. “There is a lack of players specializing in keeping this game position [the spiker] and the level of his skills would certainly serve for the team’s benefit.”
Camejo, a 32-year-old wing-spiker, is currently playing for Zenit St. Petersburg volleyball club and he was granted the Russian citizenship in 2018. According to FIVB regulations, Camejo had to serve two years of the so-called quarantine in order to officially change the sports citizenship to participate in international tournament as part of a new national team.
Earlier in the day, Camejo told TASS that one of his prime targets was to play as part of the Russian national volleyball team at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Japan’s Tokyo.
“The Russian national team is one of the strongest across the globe and playing as part of this team is an honor,” Camejo said. “As soon as the procedure of the sports citizenship is over, I will get an opportunity to play for the Russian national team.”
“In case members of the coaching staff of the Russian national team express their interest in me, I will be definitely glad to join the squad,” he added.
