Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer replaces Merkel as Germany’s Christian Democratic Union leader

BERLIN, December 7. /TASS/. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on Friday was elected new leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) following Angela Merkel’s retirement from that role.

Kramp-Karrenbauer, the party’s secretary general since early 2018 and Merkel’s closest ally, scored 517 votes, or 51.57% of delegates of the party congress. Her closest rival, Friedrich Merz, won 482 votes (48.25%).
