Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, deputy head of the Department for External Church Relations, noted that the meaning of this sign is yet to be fully realized.
The fire that engulfed one of the main symbols of Paris – Notre-Dame de Paris – caused a great loss. Grief over it brings Orthodox and Catholics closer together, Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, deputy head of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR), told TASS on Monday.
“In the West, now is the first day of Holy Week. The great loss, a terrible sign, the meaning of which we have yet to fully realize, causes acute pain, fills our hearts with compassion, brings us closer to our Western Christian brothers, ”he said.
Balashov noted that “both our history and our soul are connected with this ancient stronghold of the Christian faith, which formed the Europe that is inexpressibly dear to us, which even for the most original Russian thinkers <...> was a country of holy miracles.”
“May the Mother of God save the Christians of the West in these tribulation hours,” the interlocutor of TASS concluded.
